We Made This Magazine During the Flipboard Chinatown Photowalk

Flip Chinatown

Last Saturday morning, an intrepid group of photographers joined Flipboard for our inaugural Magmaker Photowalk in San Francisco.

It turned out to be a beautiful day. We gathered on the southern edge of San Francisco’s Chinatown for a quick round of introductions; then we broke into smaller groups and fanned-out to explore.

As we plunged into the nearby streets and alleyways to capture images of this complex neighborhood, some took pictures with mobile phones, others used point-and-shoots or DSLRs and one photog even showed up with a vintage Polaroid Land Camera:

Ninety minutes later, we gathered again at the Empress of China, a classic Chinatown restaurant and cocktail lounge that offers excellent views of the city, pristine midcentury decor and rather excellent Mai Tais:

Once everyone had a chance to refuel, we used Flipboard search to find all the photos we had taken via our #flipchinatown hashtag. Then we made a magazine to collect our images from the photowalk. It’s called “Flipboard in Chinatown,” and several members of the group are participating as co-contributors. Click on the cover image to take a peek:

Thanks to everyone who came out to join us, and very, very special thanks go out to Doctor Popular, our celebrity guest and resident iPhone photography guru.

We’ll do more Magmaker Events in the weeks and months ahead, so stay tuned for future announcements. There’s more fun to be had (and more magazines to be made), so we look forward to seeing you next time.
